Unusual Requests and Rants with JibberJobber
Unusual Requests and Rants with JibberJobber Every once in a while I get a heated (HEATED!) email from someone about some crazy thing were doing to them because they signed up on JibberJobber. Heres a recent Im deleting my account because message: Because you guys gave me the upgrade when i didnt want it! I do not want to pay almost 10 dollars a month for this job website. There are two points here: We gave her an upgrade, even though she didnt want it. When you sign up for JibberJobber and LOGIN FOR THE FIRST TIME we award you 14 days of premium. For people who DONT WANT IT, let me apologize now for giving you this free 14 days. For everyone else who appreciates it, let me encourage you to use that time to import your contacts from Outlook, Gmail Contacts, LinkedIn, etc. And if you really dont want it, just pretend you have the free level no harm, no foul, right? She doesnt want to pay almost 10 bucks a month for this. Really? Well guess what NO PROBLEM. JibberJobber was designed to give you what you NEED for free. Forever. We dont force you or strong arm you into paying anything, ever. You upgrade when you want, downgrade when you want. But the irony of this beef is this: how are we going to charge you? At this point you havent given us any payment information, or authority to charge you? It is not possible for us to charge you unless you give a credit card, ya know? Were not scammers. About a year ago I got an extremely heated, ALL UPPER CASE email from someone who was LIVID that we gave him the premium upgrade and the 14 day clock started ticking from when he first logged in. Im amazed that some people have great ideas while others offer no solution or suggestion, just very heated, passionate, disrespectful yuckiness. Even though I have an official, legal company, I am not out to cheat anyone. I want to provide high value, and hope that some people will pay for it. Its the old underpromise/overdeliver thing. Im out to please, not hurt. Unfortunately, some people think companies are out to hurt and cheat them. Thats not me. How does this apply to your job search? Read this post: Are You Bleeding? Do your communications with people, whether at a networking event, in the anonymous online world, in email, on the phone, or on your thank you letters, show your blood all over? I would never, ever recommend or want to communicate with someone who craps all over me (they might crap all over the person I introduce them to, right?). Direct Sellers Friend from the Field - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Direct Sellers Friend from the Field - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The direct selling industry has been around for a very long time, and it continues to be an excellent way to sell products. Itâs because consumers buy from people they know and trust, and direct sellers mainly rely on the relationships they build with their customers through parties and personal interactions. Word of mouth marketing continues to be the best way to promote a brandâs products and services. Advertisements have slowly lost their impact because theyâre basically broadcasting information that the audience could either absorb or reject, and this is not how consumers nowadays are choosing to buy products and services. Theyâre a lot smarter now, asking their friends and family for recommendations, doing their research online and off, and this is why direct selling continues to be an effective way to sell since it relies on word of mouth. Getting started as a direct seller isnât difficult, but becoming a successful one is where the challenge is. Youâre off to a great start if you really like and use the products, and you genuinely want others to benefit from the products as well. But itâs also a great idea to learn from those who are already established and who have direct experience in the field. These are the people who really know what it takes to go out there, throw a party, do a sales pitch, and have experienced both triumphs and disappointments as a direct seller. Being taken under the wing of someone who really knows the ropes can be very helpful for those who are just beginning at direct selling. Though the company gives you all the products and information you need to get out there and sell, someone with field experience will be able to guide you through the steps to really becoming a successful direct seller. Here are some tips to help you find that friend from the field. Start networking Successful entrepreneurs and business owners know the importance of networking in business. You canât just establish a business and hope that it works out. You have to find people who can help you, who can lead you to prospects and customers who can get your business off the ground, and whoâll spread the word about your brand. You can go online and off to find that person with direct experience on the field. In the off-line world, you can join local groups and communities where you may be able to meet the person youâre looking for. You may even be surprised to find out that you have acquaintances who already fit the bill. Online, there are so many resources you can utilize. You can use social networking sites to search for people within your connections. LinkedIn, for example, is a great way to find fellow direct sellers who have excellent field experience. Since youâre able to see the second and third degree connections within your network, you may find exactly who youâre looking for and ask for an introduction from the people youâre connected to. Look within your company Your company can actually be the best resource for you to find that person who has excellent field experience with direct selling. You can ask your company directly about who they can recommend to guide you in establishing your direct selling business, someone who has lots of field experience and has infinite practical information to impart. Your company should definitely be willing to help you out since it will also help them in the long run. The advantage of this is that youâll have someone who really knows the ins and outs of selling the same products you do, so theyâd already have lots of strategies up their sleeve. The insights and lessons you can learn from this person will surely be invaluable in your career. As a direct seller, you need to utilize all the resources available to you so that you can have a successful business. Your company can only do so much by providing you the tools and information of the trade, so you also have to exert a lot of effort into really learning the ropes and methods of selling and getting leads and prospects. This is why finding that friend from the field would really be extremely useful for your career. Knowledge and talent can get you started, but it is experience that really separates the amateur from the professional. With the guidance of someone with field experience, you can really have first-hand view of what itâs like to be a direct seller, because only those whoâve been there will really be able to get you over the hurdles and help you succeed. 7 Ways to be a better delegator
7 Ways to be a better delegator We all know that we need to be good at delegating in order to have any traction in our careers. We need to be able to learn how to do something and then teach someone else how to do it, so that we can move on and learn how to do something new. This is as true for creative people as it is for management types. Yet even though we know this, most of us have trouble actually doing it. Many people think theyre the exception to the rule that delegating is important, but in their very unique, particular case, its impossible. Newsflash: Its never impossible to delegate its all in the mind of the delegator. Here are seven ways to get started on the road to all-star delegation: 1. Get over your perfectionist streak. The key to delegating is recognizing that your ability to do things perfectly isnt as highly valued as you think it is. In fact, perfectionism isnt valuable in 80 percent of the work we do. If you think youre the exception to this rule which all perfectionists do consider that perfectionism is so unhealthy that its a risk factor for depression. This should make delegating come easier. 2. Decide whats most important. In order to figure out what to delegate, you need to figure out whats most important to your career. This means you need to know what your specialty is, what youre known for in the office, and what your unique value is to the company. Anything that falls outside this isnt that important to you. Once you understand this, delegating most things will be easier. Theyre nonessential to your career, so its OK if you dont leave your particular mark on them. 3. Focus on helping people grow. Your job is to help make people stars. Management is essentially an act of constant giving and constant patience. It entails giving people a little attention all the time instead of giving them lots of attention only when they mess up. In fact, if youre managing people effectively they dont mess up, because you play to their strengths and teach them how to move around their weaknesses. Hands-off management isnt respectful its negligent. People want mentoring and guidance from their manager. If you give that in a way that helps them grow while also treating them with respect, theyll love having you around. And when your direct reports love having you around, they do their best work for you out of loyalty. Even younger workers those notorious job-hoppers are loyal to respectful, hands-on managers. 4. Give away your most interesting work. If you think youre going to be able to dump your most mundane assignments onto the people who report to you, think again. After all, your job as a manager is to help people grow, so youre not actually doing your job if youre asking them to copy and collate all day long. So consider keeping the grunt work for yourself sometimes. Your direct reports will appreciate it, and itll probably give you more empathy in general since youll have an idea of how soul-crushing mindless work can be. The real upside to this, though, is that the people you delegate to stay more engaged in the work theyre doing. So if you pitch in on the small, stupid tasks, you get good results on the large, important ones. 5. Blame yourself if no one can do a task as well as you. A lot of people dont delegate because theyre the only person who can do a particular task. If thats you, youre probably deluding yourself. First off, the task probably isnt as difficult as you think it is; its just that no one would do it exactly the way you do, which is fine. But in addition to that, if no one can do the tasks you do, its because youre hoarding knowledge and making things needlessly complicated. The solution isnt complicated, though: Share the knowledge and let someone else give the task a try. You dont need to be the only person doing it in order to feel important. 6. Take a vacation. If youre really having trouble delegating, go on vacation for a couple of weeks. When you get back, find who did which parts of your job while you were gone. Then distribute those parts permanently. If someone didnt do a good job of it while you were away, its not evidence that you shouldnt delegate. Its evidence that you need to help the person grow into the job. 7. Practice at home. The last time I moved, it was a big deal I had to abandon all my stuff and was out of my mind with stress. Im typically good at delegating, but that time I went outside even my own comfort zone: I couldnt deal with picking the color to paint the walls of my new house, so I told the painters to pick colors that would calm me down. They did. I wouldnt have picked the shades of yellow they picked, but it was fine I got used to the yellow. And if I hadnt been able to delegate as much as I did, I would never have gotten through the move. We can all get through the good times. The test of our skills is getting through the bad ones. So when you think about delegating, recognize that, done right, it can mean the difference between enduring the rough patches and making yourself crazy for no good reason.

How to Write a Language Skills Resume
How to Write a Language Skills ResumeThe language skills resume is perhaps the most important part of a resume. Your CV is there to grab the attention of your future employer. What you leave out could make the difference between getting a call back or not.So, what can you do to make sure that the resume and cover letter you send to a potential employer are the most beneficial? By no means should you try to be creative or write out everything you know about your product. A good CV is an important part of your career. You need to create a standard language skills resume. It doesn't matter if you're applying for a low-level position. It doesn't matter if you're applying for an entry-level position. This is your first impression on a potential employer. When you're trying to craft language skills resume, the easiest thing to do is use the same format as that of a formal CV. You can then go over the same information again in order to make it as impressive as possible. You want the reader to be impressed by the experience you have, and with a standard language skills resume, you can do that. One of the most basic things to include is your name. You can be as vague as you like - and of course, if you are required to give a reason for not providing your full name, don't hesitate to do so. Also include the telephone number and email address of the person you will be contacting.Other than the contact information, the next thing you need to include are some of your accomplishments. Write down any awards, honors, or certificates you may have received. That way, if you later need to find this information, you'll have it all written down at your fingertips. It's always a good idea to mention any previous positions you held. Finally, include an introduction to your language skills. Include examples of what you are known for in your field and give examples of the work you've done. Mention where you learned your particular style of writing.By using this format, you can write a lang uage skills resume that looks like it was written by someone who knows what they're doing. Career luck or something else - Hire Imaging
Career luck or something else - Hire Imaging Do you have to be in the right place at the right time to move forward in your job search or career? What if youâre already there? Can you make your own luck? The word luck comes up regularly in conversations. People talk about strokes of luck or lucky breaks. But how do we define luck if pushed? Can it be jolted with a personal charm or accessory? Is it chance or a twist of fate? And why do some people seem to have consistent good luck while others seem to be a magnet for misfortune? Perhaps thereâs truth in the old saying, âYou make your own luck.â What if we defined luck as: Doing as much as you can to increase your probability of success And what ifâ"no matter what your experience with luck in the past, you could cultivate the characteristics to harvest it in the future? I think any of us can. In my work coaching clients in their careers, I see three common personality traits that seem to bring luckâ"opportunities, good fortuneâ"whatever you wish to call itâ"to them. Some real-life cases in point: Trust your gut Iâve worked with Carol for more than a decade. In 2002, her husband of 16 years left her. Carol was devastated and felt she would never find another guy she could be serious with. In 2005, her colleague introduced her to a single dad named Mike. When Mike asked her out not long afterward, Carol was on the verge of saying ânoâ. She told me it was because he was Jewish; she was a devout Christian. It had seemed a given to her that the two worlds would not mesh. Something stopped her. âIt was though I literally had an inner voice telling me, âyour co-worker would not have introduced you to someone she didnât think special. Have a date. Whatâs the worst that can happen?ââ So, Carol went on that first date with Mike. They have been happily married since 2009. Thereâs a strong tie between luck and intuition. Research has shown that 90% of lucky people said they trusted their gut when it came to making smart decisions about personal relationships; 80% also said it played a key role in their careers. While some analysis is always good (intuition is not the same as impulse), sometimes getting lucky is going with your gut! Strike while the ironâs hot My client, Tracy has good things happen to her all the time. A successful entrepreneur with a whole-foods store, people always tell Tracy how lucky she is. âLuck has nothing to do with it,â she once told me. About a year ago, Tracy met and chatted with a woman at a local farmers market. The woman mentioned that she was an editor with a national food magazine. Tracy invited her new acquaintance to visit her store. A few months later, the editor did just that; and brought with her a photographer. Within the next year, Tracyâs business was featured by the magazine in a five-page article. To this day, mention of her store appears in print and other media throughout the United States. Her business has grown ten-fold. You donât have to do anything dramatic or tough for good fortune to come into your life. Sometimes, itâs just a matter of paying attention and then following up. Practice resiliency and persistency A technical writer in his 9-5 job, Darrin wrote his first novel. He sent it off to 45 publishers. It was rejected by the same number. Part of Darrinâs career / personal brand was in âI love doing what others say I canât do.â On a cold winterâs evening, Darrin invited some close friends to a pot-luck brainstorming supper at his home. One of them volunteered to ask advice from a friend who worked in book publishing. That person ended up suggesting a small Midwestern publishing house that Darrin had not approached. That publisher loved the book. Yep; it was published. And it got Darrin onto a speaker circuit for several universities, and also earned him explosive growth in followers on Twitter and Facebook. When the going gets tough, the lucky get going. People I know who are not resilient, often assume that failure results from some fundamental inadequacy on their part, and they give up. A resilient person will look for what might be changed or done differentlyâ"and try again. Persistence Tip: Make a list of your expectations and a timetable for achieving them; if you hit a roadblock, step back and ask yourself what the experience has taught you. Then inventory your strengths and start thinking about how to use them to bring about a different outcome. Decide that you will persevere when things arenât working out as you hoped. Life throws out things beyond our control. What we can control is our attitude and response to the tough stuff. Lucky people may just be those who figure that temporary failure is just a pothole on the road to success. Photo: BeigeAlert

Set Goals for a Successful Year
Set Goals for a Successful Year Dear Coach Wolfgang, what are your tips for having a more successful, productive and satisfying year at work? This is the time of the year when many of our clients want an objective take on their annual review from work. In fact, I recently contributed to a local newspaper article on this topic: Austin Statesman. In many cases, my clients goals are at the heart of a poor annual review. Heres my list of ways to work with your goals in order to get a favorable year-end review and find greater job satisfaction at the same time. Create your own goals for the year Your manager may help you create your annual goals, however, those are not the same as your personal career goals. Write your own goals and focus on what will make you more successful, what will make you happy, and what areas of improvement your manager identified the previous year. Set SMART goals SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. Force yourself to document your goals using these criteria and youll significantly increase your chances of achieving them. This exercise should drive the tactics you choose. Set realistic goals and tactics Your goals should be something entirely within your control. Increase revenue by 50%. is not a reasonable goal. Instead, make smaller goals that you can control that, in turn, may produce bigger results. For example, Call in to 50 accounts by February 28 is something you can control and realistically achieve. Set calendar reminders to review your goals Schedule calendar appointments every two months or every quarter schedule them for the entire year. Put reminders so they prompt you to stop your regular work and revisit your goals. For each goal, ask yourself: how close am I to achieving this goal? where am I coming up short? what new tactics do I need to make better progress toward these goals? Does my manager know about my progress toward these goals? Track your progress Track the progress you are making toward your goals. Make sure to document results and achievements when they happen. Itâs much easier to remember your great achievements in real-time than to try and remember them at yearâs end. Find a mentor or accountability partner Accomplishing your work goals is not easy. In some ways, its like trying to lose weight or start a new exercise routine. So find a friend to do the same goal-setting exercise and then meet with that person to review each otherâs progress. Alternatively, you can find an individual who will hold you accountable for meeting your goals. (Someone besides your boss!) Knowing you have to answer to someone can be good motivation. Collaborate instead of isolate Many people think that working on career goals is something they are supposed to do alone. Thats not the case. If someone asked you to build a 2-story, 2,000 sqft house would you do it all by yourself? You would find experts in architecture, wiring, foundations and so on and solicit their help. In the same way, find people in your network or consider a career coach that can help you figure out how to accomplish your goals, even help create your goals. Address obstacles blocking your job satisfaction What do you dread about work? What frustrates you or makes you unproductive or unmotivated? What is keeping you from achieving your goals? Identify the root causes, think of solutions, and present them to your boss. Dont delay. My last tip is to regularly review this list and make sure you are on track. One of my clients printed it out and claims he will hang it on his cubicle wall thats not a bad idea! Either way, take your goals seriously and dont treat them like your managers goals. They are yours and once you take ownership and focus on achieving them, youll be rewarded with a better annual review.
